Jon Kane Houldsworth is a cinematographer who appreciates the subtle details in everyday life and focuses his work upon them. Jon's visual career was inspired by his grandfathers polaroid camera, he then went on to work in film and television across Central America and New Zealand. At one point in his career, Houldsworth deviated from exposures, shutter speeds and directing and became an entrepreneur and he is now a Brand Communications Manager. Houldsworth has received significant recognition for his work such as winning the Instagram Cannes Competition for a beach cinema graph on the theme 'water in motion.' Houldsworth believes that short form video and subtle motion can convey a message, tell a story or engage the viewer. He describes his style as "Magical Realism with the odd touch of humour."
This cinemagraph has subtle movement of the rain, in front of the cup - the focal still point. This is effective as the rain does not draw your attention away from the focal point but enhances what would just be a simplistic photograph. The lighting in the cinemagraph is effective as it creates a reflection that emphasises the rain drops on the table.
The movement in this cinemagraph is also subtle as the flower only movements slightly. However this movement and the composition of the cinemagraph draw the viewer's eye into the focal point of the flower, the low depth of field also adds to this effect.
The movement in this cinemagraph is more obvious as the plant is being moved quickly in the wind. The orange and hand in the foreground also makes the movement more obvious as it is stationary. The composition of the cinemagraph is effective as the eye is drawn to the hand and orange and then notices the movement within the background.

This cinemagraph is effective as the movement is continuous. The composition of the photograph shows stationary objects which makes it clearly a cinemagraph, it also includes different textures which emphasise the depth within the composition.
This cinemagraph is effective as it shows the simple movement of the flame, contrasting with the stationary hand. However, the movement of the flame is not as effective as it does not flow continuously.
This cinemagraph is effective as it shows a subtle movement of one leaf within the whole composition, this creates tension within the cinemagraph as the viewer feels as thought the leaves are about to fall from the tree.
